Nine

Jake called Eric to the side while Laci helped Sara put Meggie into their car. Gram and Will were already on their way to the pizza place. Laci wasn’t sure why she’d accepted Eric and Sam’s invitation to ride with them. All afternoon she’d told herself that while she wanted to support Sam she needed to be careful. She had a feeling Sam and his dad could steal her heart, and much as she wanted a family of her own she knew nothing about raising five-year-old boys.

She figured a mother learned about each age as her child grew into it—from holding him in her arms when he was born to seeing him at each stage—and that it happened over time. She told herself she was being presumptuous in even thinking about raising Sam. Eric hadn’t shown that kind of interest in her. . .until now. And she was assuming a lot to think that offering to drive her to the pizza place meant he was interested in her.

Maybe it was wishful thinking on her part because try as she might she hadn’t been able to keep Eric Mitchell out of her dreams. So here she was in the passenger seat of his pickup while Sam was buckled in the backseat of the extended cab.

“I can’t believe you brought your whole family to see my game, Lace! That was so cool! I had more people there than anybody!”

“They all wanted to come, Sam,” Laci assured him. “It was fun. And you were great. I have a feeling you’re the best one on the team.”

“If I am, it’s just ’cause Dad plays ball with me a lot. He teaches me all kinds of stuff.”

That didn’t surprise Laci. She had a feeling that Eric’s priorities were right where they ought to be. He seemed to be a good Christian man, and he was trying to be the best parent he could be for his son. It appeared he was doing a wonderful job, too.

After Eric parked his pickup and they started walking toward the restaurant, Sam’s hunger had him skipping a few steps ahead of them.

“It was nice of your family to show up, Laci,” Eric said in a low voice. “For a minute there I thought Sam was going to be too nervous to play his normal game. But then you started cheering him on, and that was all it took. Thank you again.”

“You’re welcome.” Just hearing her presence had that kind of effect on Sam caused Laci to wonder if she’d done the right thing by going. What if she didn’t go the next time? How would that affect Sam?

As if he could read her thoughts, Eric said, “I know you won’t be able to come to all his games, so please don’t worry about it. He might be disappointed, but he’ll always remember today.”

The thought of Sam being disappointed in her saddened her deeply. “I’ll try to make as many of his games as I can while I’m here,” Laci said.
